The Bataan-Corregidor Memorial.

A Tribute to Courage immortalizes the idea that in war there are no victors, only losers. With so many very grim days in the history of the United States , as it fought overseas wars far from its shores, it's amazing how history never seems to stop repeating itself. The Bataan-Corregidor Memorial yearns to eternalize the lives of the brave American and Filipino soldiers and servicemen and the civilian men and women whose heroism was notable.

Nestled in the heart of Orlando , this one of a kind monument is a major tourist draw. Its creation is traced back on Nov. 4, 1987 as Richard O. Herring and Menandro M. deMesa met for the first time at The Orlando Sentinel's Ninth Annual Writers Forum for an ordinance related to the use of the American flag. Their subsequent collaboration gave birth to a project concerning Filipino-American relations.  What started as a regular discussion about the sad fate of the Bataan-Corregidor veterans paved the way for a more noble milestone.

Endorsed by Governor Lawton Chillies.

With the help of the local officials of Orlando City, Herring's proposal to set aside a prime lakefront location to be the future site of the Bataan-Corregidor Memorial was heralded unanimously.

The Bataan-Corregidor Memorial Foundation was then formed to undertake the project.  On July 15, 1993, the State of Florida duly recognized it as a non-profit organization, followed by the U.S. Internal Revenue Services approval on September 22, 1993, of its tax-exempt, tax deductible status under Section 501(c)(3).  In other words, donations to the project are 100% tax deductible under Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code.

The project was endorsed by Governor Lawton Chilies, U.S. Senator Connie Mack, Congressmen Jim Bacchus and Bill McCollum, Orange County Chairman Linda Chapin, Orlando Mayor Glenda Hood, former Orlando Mayor Bill Frederick, Orlando Mayor John B. Pollett and General William C. Wesstmoreland.

The memorial now stands proudly and is regaled as one of the most popular tourist stops in the city. The Bataan-Corregidor memorial not only honors the gallant American and Filipino defenders of Bataan and Corregidor but also those who fought throughout the Philippines in World War II.  It hopes to serve as a grim reminder that Americans and Filipinos fought and died side by side in the last two World Wars, in Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf.
